Why Should You Consider Hiring a Birth Doula?

A couple of years ago, during my second pregnancy, I was determined to have a birth that could unfold naturally, free from unnecessary medical interventions. I prepared diligently—taking in-depth childbirth classes and choosing a medical care provider whose philosophy aligned with my vision of birth. I also hired a doula because, based on what I had read online, they provide support during labor.

At the time, I assumed that a doula’s role was primarily hands-on physical comfort during the intense process of labor and birth. My first birth experience had left me feeling overwhelmed despite having taken childbirth classes and having my partner by my side. The intensity and pain had been more than I felt prepared for, and I struggled to cope. This time, I wanted someone who truly knew how to provide comfort—someone skilled in massage, positioning, and pain-relief techniques.

With this ideal birth team in place, I felt ready for my dream birth. Or so I thought.

When Plans Change: The Unexpected Value of a Doula

Little did I know that my patience would be put to the test. My baby showed no signs of arriving—even as I passed my due date by 10 days. I hadn’t anticipated this scenario at all. While my doctor was patient and not pressuring me, I knew time was running out. The possibility of induction loomed closer, and I feared what that would mean for my plan to have an unmedicated, natural birth.

This was when I truly experienced the power of a doula. Just as I was feeling overwhelmed by my fears, anxieties, and the constant questions from family and friends, my doula offered to visit me. The moment she called to say she was coming over, I felt an immense sense of relief. Suddenly, I didn’t feel so alone—I knew that at least one person truly understood what I was going through.

As soon as I poured my heart out to her, I immediately felt lighter. And then, she showcased her expertise. Using her knowledge, she guided me through specific exercises to encourage my baby into an optimal position—since a malposition could have been delaying labor. It felt so empowering to be doing something proactive rather than relying on superstitions and old wives’ tales that weren’t working.

But perhaps the most profound support she offered wasn’t physical—it was emotional. She spoke to me heart to heart, helping me recognize how I was clinging to the idea of a “perfect” birth and how that attachment might actually be holding my baby back. She encouraged me to let go of the outcome, to trust my body and my baby to take their own course. That shift in mindset turned out to be the single most important factor in kickstarting my labor that very night!

More Than Just Labor Support

So you see, my doula played a crucial role even before labor began. And, of course, she was by my side throughout labor, birth, and beyond. But interestingly, I didn’t end up needing much of the hands-on comfort I had originally envisioned. Instead, her reassuring presence, combined with the loving embrace of my husband, was enough to help me find the strength within myself to ride the waves of labor. Whenever I doubted myself or felt like giving up, she was there to remind me that I was capable.

This incredible, one-of-a-kind support was my awakening—my realization of my true calling in life: to become a doula myself.

Why You Should Consider Hiring a Doula

A doula is more than just a birth coach. They are a steady, knowledgeable presence who support you not just physically, but also emotionally and mentally. They help you prepare for birth, navigate unexpected challenges, and feel empowered in your choices. Whether it’s through comfort techniques, evidence-based guidance, or simply being a reassuring presence, a doula adapts to your unique needs.

If you’re expecting a baby, I encourage you to consider hiring a doula. Because sometimes, the greatest support isn’t about doing—it’s about being. And in those most vulnerable, transformative moments, having someone by your side who truly understands can make all the difference.
